Ethical Issues in Case Refusal, Termination and Referral of Clients
The “ending” of every clinical relationship is fraught with ethical pitfalls, and social workers are obligated to manage terminations in ways that preserve and protect their clients’ dignity, privacy and right to self-determination. This challenge becomes more difficult when the termination is involuntary or in the context of conflict.
Two related ethical challenges related to termination are: when a clinical relationship seems to continue beyond the time of clear clinical need, and when a social worker refuses to begin working with a client. In both of these situations careful ethical discernment is essential
This ethics round table will be an opportunity for sharing, facilitated discussion with colleagues, and processing of relevant case studies.
